the smell of canadian rain

A place to share your voices with janis so she can write them into a new play. What does Canadian rain smell like? Stars, apparently.

On sunshine and space

I have to agree with everyone that rain is extremely thought provoking. It's something completely unreal, especially if I'm by myself.

There's also something to be said about sunshine and space. I find that when it's quite sunny outside, and I go out to a field by myself and just lie on the grass and look at the sky, a lot of thoughts form. And even if I can't remember everything I've thought about, it's a good place to just forget about problems and go through the clouds. Or when I'm alone on a hill on a sunny day, looking out around a field or the neighbourhood, seeing people walk in and out of their houses, wondering what they were doing just before.

In general, I find that the weather can provoke a lot of different feelings and thoughts. Not only that but being alone outside with a lot of space allows for my mind to wander and, well, think outside the box. Be it rain, snow, sunshine, or wind, being alone outside is amazing for my thought processes.

Even better is when you are joined by someone else out there with all that space and weather whirling around and talk about anything. And you can talk about life and reflect on what one usually finds is stupid and useless like the number of blades of grass on the hill. Or what the wind could tell you if it was living with the ability to hear, see, and speak.

So I guess it's really having some space, freedom, and time to just forget the rules and pressure put on us by our crazy lives. That's when I get the most done. In my head, anyway.

i like this. sunshine and space, yes. i've had many a beautiful moment sitting in the sun... especially on top of big hills next to someone special. and... i was actually playing with the idea of "a taste of sunlight in december" as a title. your note here has me thinking that maybe there could be snow all around, but no one is really moved by it... what they are moved by is the first dose of sunlight they've had in days or weeks. maybe that sort of compares to a really amazing spring rain... maybe?

thanks for your post.

i'm curious of other people's sunshine stories, moments, thoughts...

Everyone has smelled the rain, but when I say "the taste of sunlight" is that something you can relate to?

For me, in the most tangible sense, sunlight tastes like the ginormous tomatoes we grew in my backyard when I was a kid. It also tastes like my skin smells after I've accummulated new freckles. But there's something else. Something much less tangible... it comes when I close my eyes, tilt my face up like petals on a plant, soak in the warmth of the light, and for a few moments feel myself radiating like the sun itself. And that feeling, for some reason, is something I can taste -- almost like a snowflake on my tongue.

What does it taste like for you?
