Rain's equal?
I have been trying to think of themes for a possible sequel to "the smell of rain when it's raining". It has proven extreamly difficult. The idea of rain in the first gave the play a sense of romance, beauty, calm, thoughtfulness and innocence all wrapped up in one. I have found it very hard to come up with something else that would do all those emotions justice. Those feelings in "the smell of rain when it's raining" are so strong, that they should be mimicked in it's sequel, but (of course) in a different context. If a sequel were to occur, we would need to find something that gives the play those same feelings, but provoke new thoughts, and really make the audience contemplate life, especially if they saw the first.
I don't think "snow" would do it justice at all. snow has a comlpleatly different feeling than rain, and I think especially in Canada, we've all had enough of snow.
Of course, what we're looking for dosn't necessarily have to be related with the weather at all, it could be something like ... pencils. And the entire play would concentrate on the existence of a pencil - which would keep coming up in the conversations of all the couples, and among friends. Sorry, pencils was the first thing I thought of.
What about Christmas?
In any case, it's something to think about.

pencils. i like that. why not? what do you have to say about the existence of pencils?
and i think you're totally right on with the idea that a new play would need to evoke new thoughts but similar feelings to Rain.
i want to start getting those new thoughts out there, stewing on this blogger. i've been going over my notes from the reading and the workshops in your schools and i'm going to post some stuff soon that i hope will spark some good conversation.
and for now... how about those pencils...
gee, pencils was just the first thing that popped into my head, but let me think...
pencils let you write down all your thoughts - absolutley anything. Its sort of incredible how something so small and seemingly meaningless can help produce amazing works of art - pictures, poems, songs, stories.
mabey pencils can represent people. they have different layers to them - the lead, the wood, then you have the eraser and metal do-bob on the end, it's just like how a person can have many sides to them. - the lead is like their actions and words that you engrave in the minds of others. and the eraser is the conscience
of a person. when they know they did something wrong, they can ask for forgiveness and "erase" the past.
