who are we?
OK. So, I don't really know any of you and that 's kinda weird. Maybe for you too? I think we should all introduce ourselves or something now that we have a bunch of people writing from different places. Who are you guys exactly? How do you all know eachother--do you have a theatre company together? Do you go to school together? What kind of stuff do you like to do for fun? You all like to write I bet. What kind of stuff do you write about? What kind of books do you like to read? Are you all in high school? Etc. I'll start. My name is Daniella. Some people call me Dani. I don't have a preference. I'm in high school--12th grade Wahoo! I was a part of The Smell of Rain When it's Raining when it first started and then I was a dramaturg with Elizabeth for the show. umm, for fun, i like to ride my bike and play my oboe and water-ski (but not all at once haha). i have a gueana pig named Penny Lane and I love him a lot (we didn't know he was a he when we first got him). um, I like to draw but I'm not great at it. And I like spiders. OK, i cant think of anything else. so now it's your turn.

well, my name is Molly. i am in high school, grade 12 this year. i am from edmonton, alberta, canada. i was in the second smell of rain. me, sinead (her name on this is noelle) and casey go to school together, and we met everyone else through the play. for fun i... gee, what do i do for fun? i like to sew. alot. and i like to read. my favourite books are the perks of being a wallflower, the summer of my amazing luck, 1984, dr.jekyll and mr.hyde, dracula, etc. etc. the list goes on. i am currently reading catcher in the rye. i also really like music. (very specific, i know) favourite bands being... beatles, guess who, cranberries, elvis (costello and presley), hermans hermits... almost anything old. etc.
nice to meet you Dani/Daniella
and everyone else i'm sure.....
My name is Danny. As I said previously I was part of The Smell of Rain Pt. 1. I was Sam. I don't like fun and I don't like music. Haha just kidding, I actually do like music......
Molly, what kinds of things do you sew? I think that's pretty neat.
And Danny has failed to mention that he's in College now studying film.
Actually I dropped out to become a commercial fisherman off the coast of Maine.
i sew almost anything... dresses, pants, shirts, bags, halloween costumes, hats, mitts, etc, etc. the list goes on. it is one of my absolute favourite things to do. infact, i think i might even go on and become a costume designer for theatres... but who knows. things change. we'll see!
Do you sew musketeer uniforms?
who doesn't sew musketeer uniforms?
may i ask why you ask?
No you may not.
No, I'm kidding. I was just wondering because that would be a cool and obscure thing to sew.
it would be cool. i haven't actually tried. although i am currently sewing a marching band uniform. for halloween. i'm being the walrus. not A walrus. THE walrus. as in Paul mccartney. basically i'm being a beatles reference.
ok people.
this is the lihzinator.
i am a super hero fighting evil also known as the connerman with my trusty sidekick tyler boy.
you might know us from the panago sagas.
but probably not seeing as its not really a movie, or a tv show series, or even a comic book.
its the life i live at my job.
which is panago.
where i make pizzas.
and as aforementioned fight evil.
i graduated last year.
and.
basically am saving up to travel.
and thats about it.
for the rest of my life.
work.
travel.
work.
travel.
work.
travel.
maybe perhaps i will mix them both together and end up with a little of.
working while travelling.
hmm.
we will see.
anywhoo.
i recently got hired by cutco.
maybe some of you have heard of it.
i sell knives.
yup.
well.
i sold knives.
for like a week.
and then i quit yesterday.
because i dont have a phone.
and really.
to be able to do that job a phone is a must.
sooo.
i am back on the market for a job.
yey.
i think i will apply to hmv in kingsway.
even though it takes a bit of time to get there from where i live.
but i was there yesterday.
and there are quite a large number of boys, and not just any type of boys, cute boys who happen to like music.
quite a shallow reason to get a job.
but at this point in my life.
i think im entitled to a little bit of shallowness and just having a good time.
anywhoo.
what else.
i live alone.
and it sucks.
i have to kill hugemongous spiders that attack without notice all by myself.
and its SCARY.
my tvs broken.
as is my cd player.
so my only form of outside entertainment comes from the radio.
the bear thank you very much.
rawr.
and it never gets turned off.
but mostly because im worried that my darling little mouse, hubert will get lonely when i am gone and try to escape his cage or something equally saddening.
so i let him listen to some good old rock and roll.
he seems to enjoy it.
i think he has a thing for denai.
o well.
he cant be perfect right.
so other than listening to the radio non stop.
i work.
all the freaking time.
and i mean all the freaking time.
i have no life anymore.
sigh.
i read though.
lots actually.
since my friend hacked into the library system and erased all my fines.
shhhh.
andddd.
i basically explore the city.
ive only lived in edmonton..
coming onto four years.
so i still havent figured out all the wonderful nooks and crannies of it.
and im still discovering grandness.
as well as not so grandness i will admit.
but yes.
thats about it.
sometimes when i actaully dont work.
like once or twice a month.
i call people up and my friends once again remember that they know someone named lihz.
and thats always fun.
but yes.
anywhoo.
i must run.
or i will be late to work.
and we all know the hero cant be late to the battle.
off to face another fight against evil in...
the panago saga.
dundundundun.
Lihz! You're back! I'm so glad! I thought we'd lost you to the after-graduation abyss and I was very sad because I need your voice in this play.
So, what are you reading? And do you ever read out loud to Hurbet? And how is it you have a pet mouse anyhow? And where are you writing to us from? The library where your fines magically disappeared? (Impressive). And most importantly, what are you thinking about these days?
Have the stars changed for you since you last thought about them?
hi my name is KK, i am in high school grade 11 this year. I was born in england, but im originally from nigeria...i just spent 12 years of my life in the middle east, im very athletic love sports: rugby, football, track etc.on the other hand i also love to read, my favourite series of all time is the dark tower series by steven king, i recomend it to everyone...i was in the second rendition of the smell of rain when its raining and i played rainboy...but on kk im funny, shy untill i warm up to you, but once i do its pretty hard to get me to stop talking but atleast ill make u laugh
KK! Glad you're back. Sorry about football, but glad you've now got some time on your hands to wonder about time and space and stars with us. Question for you -- you said that you were born in England but you're originally from Nigeria. I think that's an extraordinary statement. Is that how you usually describe your ancestrial history? And just to get the record straight, after England you moved to the Middle East and then to Canada? I'm curious what the stars look like in the Middle East... do they seem closer or further away? Are the skies clear? Do people spend much time wondering about them? And what about during football season? Do you ever play under the stars? Do you ever crash after a game on the grass and look up them?
And Elizabeth! Very nice to see you here. It's been a long time since I've heard your (written) voice. I missed it!
yeh thats how i usually portray my ancestry. and yeh after 18 months in england i moved to the middle east spent 13 years there and moved to canada
STARS IN THE MIDDLE EAST...breathtaking its not really closer or farther away its more of a distinction, you can see alot of constalations with the naked eye... i have a memory its in oman, we just got back from some late event...and i looked up at the sky it was a full moon, but around the moon their was this pale ring, ive never actually researched what its called or anything but its an image thats stayed with me for a long time 5 or 6 years
in the middle east their isnt much cloud cover at night(my favourite constalation would have to be orion's belt), and unlike here in edmonton you can see everything and then when you go camping it sort of like their are more stars than space, people dont really talk about it though i guess it sort of becomes a natural part of life if its all youve seen
football and the stars
we got off to a rocky start this season, we lost our first 3 games, and then came back and one our next 3 and lost our last on in the semifinals to ross shpe 9-2...but we had some games underneath the stars and during the game u dont really think about it but afterwards, they really helped me calm down and get back to earth...and they helped me when i was down about a loss, because i sort of thought that in the grand scheme of the universe im not even a cog in the clockwork, and if i stopped to think about the loss time would just pass me by so it was always onwards and upwards...
Ummmm I'm Nathan
I live in Edmonton for the present. I go to school at Grant Macewan, I'm taking Theatre Arts and its pretty amazing. I dont presently have a job seeing as how I go to school 12 hours a day 6 days a week. YAY!
Ummm I'm hella into Star Wars (I have a tatoo *shakes head*) and anything that makes me question life itself...
yes!.
im back.
well occasionally.
i dont have much spare time as previosuly mentioned.
so i try to get a word in when i can.
but you know how it goes.
yea i go the library to use the computers because im just that cool.
baha.
and lets see what am i reading?.
well everything really.
i read about a book a day.
so what arent i reading is more the question.
but actually i just stumbled across this trilogy that i am currently in lohve with.
and am waiting for the third and last(sniff) book to come to my library so i can find out what happens.
uhm.
my time is about to be cut off.
so i will finish this post in another one after i log on again.
because i know how to cheat the system.
yey.
be right back...
ok.
back again.
soo.
yea.
the trilogy that im reading is all about this like next century where at the age of sixteen everyone gets an operation where they become beautiful.
and their brians get played with in the process but only certian people know about it and yea.
so if anyone feels like a good read.
the first book is uglies
second is pretties.
and third is specials.
theyre by scott westerfield im pretty sure.
but yea.
its cool.
and while im waiting for the third book im reading a book about troy.
i always lohve books about troy.
and mythology really.
i dont like the real stuff.
just the fiction about the gods and the trojan war and all that.
anywhoo.
i actually do read aloud to hubert.
but only when im practicing my german.
because im going there next summer to visit my best friend because thats where she lives.
and icant go not knowing any german at all.
i learnt a sweet sentence before, while she was here visiting during the summer.
where is the spatula.
its great.
im not going to try to spell that out in german.
but yea.
as you can see, whenever i am in germany i am well prepared if the spatula goes missing.
baha.
and actually.
having hubert is a pretty funny story.
well i think so anyway.
drama 30.
spoofs.
my group is doing ninja turtles.
we bought a mouse to be master splinter.
and i got to keep him.
because he was sooooo freaking adorable.
he really is.
and yea.
weve been together ever since.
its just me and him and its the life.
anywhooo.
i actually have to beat it.
becasue i am on the search for new living accomadations.
and i have to find a new apartment to move into by nov 30.
and so far.
nothing is working.
so i really have to go because today is prime day seeing as im up so early.
baha.
tata.
Hi again Lhiz. How's the apartement hunt going? I love that you're practicing your German on Hubert -- these kinds of details are gold. You just can't make up stuff that good. And if you did, no one would believe it was real... but I won't go on about that here because I think I'm going to go on about it in response to Nathan's post about RAOVIA.
Anyhow, what would be super is if you could take some of your own super details and lend them to a character... If you have some time soon, it'd be super awesome if you could write a little wish monologue on the 'zut! wishes' post. I think there's one there that you will really relate to...
hey, i'm sorry I've been off for a while. My name is siwei and i'm grade eleven. somehow, ive run out of time to do any options related to theatre and i guess it just migrated to the back of my mind. BUT NOW I'M BACK cuz my brain said HEY, you are CRAZY for always working or homeworking. both have that disgusting w word and you gotta do something you can just think freely about. so i am. i work at mcd's and im a manager. but the part of that i like the best is either opening the restaurant or closing it. because if i open, im there at mabye 4:30am and everything outside is foggy, there are no cars in the parking lot, i take out my keys and go into the lobby and everything's clean. everything's DONE and all i have to do is set up for the day. I can clean without customers by myself and things stay clean. i can think about anything i want in the silence...well, not silence, cuz there's machinery starting up, but it's this buzz that i barely notice. that's in the morning. at night, if everyone's already left and it looks like ground zero because cleaning isn't done, it's still awesome. because i can sweep. i can pretend to be anything that involves sweeping: a mother picking up after her kids, a person who sweeps the streets, a maid, or just me, cleaning my house, getting everything done without interruptions. i am not a fan of interruptions. i like a lot of me time. so i like opening or closing by myself so i can think. and i never remember what i think about, but the point is, i have time to think. not about school, nto about marks, or my friends, or relationships. i can imagine what could be, about my future, about other people's futures, about how we're all connected int he world and everyone can affect everyone. i can think about the things that you dont have to worry about or think about thinking about. just silence...even if it's a place of work.
Siwei... so nice to have your voice on here again. It sounds like you've been very busy! I thought I had it bad having to get up at 5:30... gees. You put me to shame. When do you work? I hope it's only that early for you on weekends.
What are you working for? Are you saving for college? Do most of the people you know have jobs? Here in France none of the students have jobs. In the US though its pretty common. I've been working since I was 14. But I couldn't exactly tell you why. I guess I was just scared that there wouldn't be enough money for me to do what I wanted... especially when I started thinking about going to an arts university.
I think that's pretty cool that you you can enjoy something about your job... enjoy that silence.
You introduced some things that you think about, but I'm curious about the details. Specifics. Maybe next time you open or close and are there all alone, you can mentally record some thoughts that replay in your mind and write them here.
And... can you see the stars at that hour of the morning? What do they look like?
sure, people look over old posts... i certainly do quite regularly to get ideas as i'm writing.
since you travel a lot and i think one or two of the characters are going to be on an airplane in the play... i'm hoping maybe you could write a little more about what kinds of thoughts go through your mind when you're on a plane. Maybe even in the form of a wish monologue...
